Causes of Breast Lump
Common benign causes include fibroadenomas, fibrocystic breast changes related to hormonal fluctuations, cysts, and fat necrosis following injury. Malignant lumps arise from uncontrolled growth of breast tissue cells, with risk increased by family history, genetic mutations such as BRCA1/BRCA2, age, and hormonal factors including early menstruation or late menopause. Infections such as mastitis can also cause a tender lump, particularly during breastfeeding.
