What is Malaria?
Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It remains endemic in several parts of India, particularly in tribal and forested regions, with seasonal peaks during and after the monsoon. The parasite infects and destroys red blood cells, producing cyclical fevers along with chills and profound fatigue that characteristically recur at regular intervals depending on the species involved. Plasmodium falciparum infection is the most dangerous form and can rapidly progress to severe malaria affecting the brain, kidneys, and other organs. Timely diagnosis with blood smear or rapid antigen testing and prompt antimalarial treatment are essential to prevent life-threatening complications.
