Causes of Multiple Sclerosis
Believed to result from an abnormal immune response that mistakenly attacks the myelin covering of nerve fibres in the central nervous system, triggered by a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Certain viral infections, particularly Epstein-Barr virus, have been strongly associated with increased risk, and low vitamin D levels and smoking are also recognised risk factors. Family history increases susceptibility, and the condition is more common in populations living farther from the equator, suggesting a role for reduced sun exposure and vitamin D.
