What is Gastritis?
Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining that can occur suddenly as an acute episode or develop gradually as a chronic condition persisting over months or years. The inflammation weakens the stomach's protective mucus barrier, making it more vulnerable to irritation from stomach acid and increasing the risk of developing ulcers if left unaddressed. Common triggers include infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria, regular use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and excessive alcohol consumption, all of which directly irritate or damage the stomach lining. While many cases cause only mild discomfort, chronic gastritis can, over time, lead to changes in the stomach lining that slightly increase the risk of stomach cancer in certain patterns of long-standing inflammation. Identifying and addressing the underlying cause typically resolves symptoms and allows the stomach lining to heal.
