Causes of Parkinson's Disease
Caused by the progressive loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells in a specific region of the brain, though the exact trigger for this cell loss is not fully understood in most cases. Genetic factors play a role in a minority of cases, particularly those with early onset, while environmental factors such as exposure to certain pesticides and toxins have also been associated with increased risk in some studies. Age is the strongest known risk factor, with the condition becoming significantly more common after age 60.
