Causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia
Most commonly caused by compression of the trigeminal nerve by a nearby blood vessel, leading to irritation and abnormal nerve signaling. Other causes include multiple sclerosis, which damages the protective covering of the nerve, or, less commonly, a tumour pressing on the nerve. Risk factors include increasing age and conditions that cause nerve demyelination, though many cases occur without another clear underlying disease.
