What is Adenoid Hypertrophy?
Adenoid hypertrophy is the enlargement of the adenoids, a mass of lymphatic tissue located at the back of the nasal cavity above the tonsils that helps trap and fight inhaled germs. Adenoids are naturally larger in young children and typically shrink with age, but repeated infections or chronic inflammation can cause them to become persistently enlarged, obstructing the nasal airway and the openings of the Eustachian tubes. This obstruction can lead to chronic mouth breathing, snoring, and recurrent ear infections due to poor Eustachian tube drainage. It is one of the most common reasons for ENT referral in young children.
