What is Jaw Cyst?

A jaw cyst is a fluid-filled or semi-solid sac that develops within the jawbone, most commonly arising around the root of an unerupted or impacted tooth, or as a result of chronic infection at the root tip of a decayed tooth. Most jaw cysts grow slowly and painlessly, often going unnoticed until they are discovered incidentally on a routine dental X-ray or until they grow large enough to cause visible swelling or displace adjacent teeth. While the majority are benign, some types can be locally aggressive, eroding surrounding bone and requiring more extensive surgical management to prevent recurrence. Prompt diagnosis and treatment help preserve jawbone structure and adjacent teeth.

Causes of Jaw Cyst

Most jaw cysts arise from remnants of tooth-forming tissue left behind during dental development, which can become fluid-filled over time, or from chronic inflammation at the root tip of a dead or infected tooth. Impacted or unerupted teeth, particularly wisdom teeth, are a common site of origin for developmental cysts. Long-standing untreated dental infections are the most common cause of the inflammatory type of jaw cyst.

Symptoms of Jaw Cyst

painless swelling of the jaw, gradual facial asymmetry as the cyst enlarges, loosening or displacement of nearby teeth, numbness of the lip or chin if a nerve is compressed, discovery as an incidental finding on dental X-ray, occasional pain if the cyst becomes infected, thinning or weakening of the jawbone that may increase fracture risk

Treatment & Types of Jaw Cyst in Nirman Vihar, Delhi

Treatment typically involves surgical removal of the cyst, either through enucleation, where the entire cyst lining is removed, or marsupialization, where the cyst is opened and allowed to gradually shrink, depending on its size and location. Any associated impacted or non-restorable tooth is usually removed at the same time as the cyst. Following removal, the site is monitored periodically with follow-up X-rays to check for complete healing and to detect any recurrence early.

Jaw cysts are broadly classified as developmental (odontogenic) cysts, arising from remnants of tooth-forming tissue such as dentigerous cysts around unerupted teeth, or inflammatory (radicular) cysts, forming at the root tip of a decayed or dead tooth due to chronic infection. A smaller group, non-odontogenic cysts, arise from tissue unrelated to tooth development; most types are benign, though some behave more aggressively and have a higher tendency to recur.
