Causes of Retinal Detachment
Most cases occur when the vitreous gel inside the eye shrinks with age and pulls on the retina hard enough to create a tear, allowing fluid to accumulate underneath and separate it from the eye wall. Other causes include blunt or penetrating eye trauma, complications of advanced diabetic retinopathy pulling on the retina, and severe myopia, which stretches and thins the retina over time. Family history and previous cataract surgery also raise the risk of detachment.
