Causes of Umbilical Hernia
In infants, results from incomplete closure of the umbilical ring after birth; in adults, it develops from chronic increased abdominal pressure combined with weakened abdominal wall tissue. Risk factors include obesity, multiple pregnancies, ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen), chronic coughing, and prior abdominal surgery. Connective tissue weakness and repeated heavy straining also contribute.
