Causes of Preeclampsia
Thought to result from abnormal development of the placenta's blood supply early in pregnancy, leading to reduced blood flow and the release of substances into the maternal bloodstream that damage blood vessel function throughout the body. Risk factors include first pregnancy, a personal or family history of preeclampsia, chronic high blood pressure or kidney disease, obesity, multiple gestation, and certain autoimmune conditions. Advanced maternal age also increases risk.
