Causes of Post-Operative Deconditioning
Post-operative deconditioning results from a combination of prolonged immobility during recovery, the metabolic stress and inflammation triggered by surgery itself, and inadequate nutrition during the recovery period, all of which accelerate the loss of muscle mass and cardiovascular fitness. Pain, fear of movement, and sedating medications can further discourage early mobilization after surgery. Pre-existing frailty, advanced age, and prolonged hospitalization significantly increase both the severity and duration of deconditioning.
