What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain disorder affecting the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from the face to the brain, causing sudden episodes of intense, electric shock-like facial pain. The pain typically affects one side of the face and can be triggered by ordinary activities such as chewing, speaking, brushing teeth, or even a light breeze on the skin. It most often results from a blood vessel compressing the trigeminal nerve near its origin at the brainstem, though it can also occur secondary to multiple sclerosis or a tumour. Episodes can occur in clusters lasting days to months, sometimes followed by periods of remission.
