Causes of Peyronie's Disease
Peyronie's disease is believed to result from an abnormal wound-healing response following repeated minor trauma or injury to the penis during sexual activity, which triggers excessive scar tissue formation within the sheath surrounding the erectile tissue instead of normal healing. Genetic predisposition appears to play a role, as the condition is more common in men with a family history of Peyronie's disease or other connective tissue disorders such as Dupuytren's contracture. Age is a significant risk factor, with the condition becoming more common in middle-aged and older men, though the exact trigger in many individual cases is never definitively identified.
