Causes of Organ Enlargement
Organ enlargement can result from a wide range of underlying processes including infections, chronic inflammation, autoimmune disease, congestion from heart failure or blocked blood flow, infiltration by cancer cells or abnormal storage of metabolic byproducts, and benign or malignant tumours growing within the organ. The specific pattern of which organs are affected together often helps narrow down the cause, such as combined liver and spleen enlargement suggesting a blood disorder or systemic infection. Chronic alcohol use, viral hepatitis, and certain genetic storage disorders are common contributors.
