What is Multi-Organ Failure?

Multi-organ failure, also called multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, is a life-threatening condition in which two or more organ systems, such as the lungs, kidneys, liver, and cardiovascular system, progressively fail to function adequately at the same time, usually as a result of an overwhelming illness or injury. It most commonly develops as a complication of severe sepsis, major trauma, extensive burns, or prolonged shock, in which the body's inflammatory and circulatory responses become dysregulated and begin to damage organs that were not initially injured. Once multiple organs begin to fail simultaneously, the risk of death rises substantially with each additional organ system involved, making early recognition and aggressive supportive treatment in an intensive care unit essential. Recovery, when it occurs, is often prolonged and may involve lasting organ impairment.
