Causes of Thyroid Cancer
The exact cause is often unclear, but risk factors include prior exposure to radiation, particularly during childhood, a family history of thyroid cancer or certain inherited genetic syndromes such as multiple endocrine neoplasia, and chronic iodine deficiency or excess. Certain genetic mutations that drive uncontrolled growth of thyroid cells underlie the disease, with some subtypes having a stronger hereditary component than others.
