What is Dehydration?
Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, disrupting the normal balance of water and electrolytes needed for essential bodily functions. It can range from mild, easily correctable fluid loss to a severe, life-threatening state, particularly in infants, older adults, and those with chronic illness. Common triggers include excessive sweating in hot climates, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, and inadequate fluid intake, all of which are frequent in India's hot and humid conditions. As fluid losses increase, the body's ability to regulate temperature, circulate blood, and maintain organ function becomes progressively compromised. Prompt recognition and fluid replacement usually reverse mild to moderate dehydration quickly and effectively.
