Causes of End-Stage Kidney Disease
Most commonly results from long-standing diabetes and high blood pressure, which progressively damage the small blood vessels and filtering units within the kidneys over years. Other causes include chronic glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, recurrent kidney infections, and prolonged use of certain nephrotoxic medications. Once kidney function declines below a critical threshold, the damage becomes irreversible and progresses toward complete kidney failure.
