What is Short Stature?
Short stature refers to a child's height being significantly below the average expected for their age and sex, typically defined as falling below a specific percentile on standardised growth charts. In many cases, short stature simply reflects normal variation, such as familial short stature where the child's height matches their parents' genetic potential, or constitutional delay of growth, where a child grows more slowly but eventually catches up. However, short stature can also signal an underlying medical condition, including growth hormone deficiency, hypothyroidism, chronic illness, nutritional deficiencies, or certain genetic syndromes, making evaluation by a specialist important when growth is notably abnormal. Careful tracking of a child's growth pattern over time, rather than a single height measurement, is essential to distinguishing normal variation from a condition requiring treatment. When an underlying treatable cause is identified, particularly growth hormone deficiency, early intervention can meaningfully improve a child's eventual adult height.
