What is Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication characterized by the new onset of high blood pressure and signs of organ damage, most often affecting the kidneys and liver, typically developing after 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is thought to originate from abnormal development of the placenta's blood vessels, which leads to widespread effects on the mother's blood vessels and organ function. If left untreated, it can progress to eclampsia, involving seizures, or other life-threatening complications for both mother and baby, making regular prenatal monitoring essential for early detection.
