What is Cardiomyopathy?

Cardiomyopathy refers to a group of diseases that affect the heart muscle itself, making it harder for the heart to pump blood effectively to the rest of the body. The condition can cause the heart muscle to become enlarged and weakened, abnormally thickened, or stiff and less able to relax, depending on the specific type involved. Cardiomyopathy can be inherited genetically, acquired through other conditions such as long-standing hypertension or viral infection, or in some cases arise without an identifiable cause. As the disease progresses, the heart's reduced pumping efficiency can lead to heart failure, arrhythmias, or, in severe cases, sudden cardiac death. Diagnosis relies on imaging tests such as echocardiography, and treatment is tailored to the specific type and severity of disease.
