Dysphagia Specialists in Jeevan Park, Delhi

Is dysphagia always a sign of a serious condition?

Not always, but any new or worsening difficulty swallowing should be evaluated promptly since it can stem from conditions ranging from acid reflux to stroke or, less commonly, a tumour, and early evaluation improves outcomes for serious causes.

Can dysphagia lead to pneumonia?

Yes, when swallowing difficulty allows food or liquid to enter the airway instead of the esophagus, a process called aspiration, it can lead to lung infections, which is why formal swallowing evaluation and safe diet modification are important once dysphagia is suspected.

What tests are used to diagnose dysphagia?

A speech-language pathologist typically performs a clinical swallowing assessment, sometimes followed by imaging studies such as a videofluoroscopic swallow study, to see exactly where and how the swallowing process is breaking down.

Can dysphagia improve with therapy?

Yes, many people improve significantly with targeted swallowing exercises and technique training from a speech-language pathologist, particularly when the cause is neurological and rehabilitation potential exists.

Do all dysphagia patients need a feeding tube?

No, a feeding tube is reserved for severe cases where safe oral intake cannot be achieved, and many people are managed successfully with modified food textures and specific swallowing techniques instead.
