Causes of Severe Pneumonia
Severe pneumonia most commonly results from bacterial infection, particularly Streptococcus pneumoniae, though it can also be caused by viral infections such as influenza or COVID-19, or less commonly by fungal organisms, particularly in people with weakened immune systems. Progression to severe disease is more likely in people with underlying chronic lung or heart disease, older age, weakened immunity, or delayed treatment of the initial infection. Aspiration of food, liquid, or vomit into the lungs can also lead to severe pneumonia, particularly in people with swallowing difficulties.
