Causes of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency
Causes include genetic conditions such as Turner syndrome and fragile X premutation, autoimmune disorders in which the body's immune system attacks ovarian tissue, and prior chemotherapy or radiation therapy that damages ovarian follicles. In many cases, no clear underlying cause is identified despite thorough evaluation, termed idiopathic premature ovarian insufficiency. Family history also plays a role, as the condition can run in families.
