Causes of Guillain-Barre Syndrome
Believed to result from an abnormal immune response triggered by a preceding infection, most commonly a gastrointestinal infection with Campylobacter jejuni bacteria or a viral respiratory infection, in which antibodies produced to fight the infection mistakenly cross-react with and damage the protective covering of peripheral nerves. The exact reason why only a small proportion of people who experience these common infections go on to develop Guillain-Barre syndrome is not fully understood. Rarely, the condition has also been associated with certain vaccinations, though the risk from infections themselves is considerably higher.
