What is Gangrene?
Gangrene is the death of body tissue caused by a critical loss of blood supply, often affecting the extremities such as the toes, feet, or fingers, and sometimes internal organs. It can develop as a complication of severe peripheral arterial disease, diabetes, serious infection, or traumatic injury that disrupts blood flow to the affected tissue. Gangrene is classified as dry, where tissue slowly dies without infection, or wet and gas gangrene, which involve bacterial infection and can spread rapidly, becoming life-threatening within hours. It represents a surgical emergency requiring urgent treatment to prevent systemic infection and further tissue loss.
