Causes of Fungal Nail Infection
Fungal nail infection is most commonly caused by dermatophyte fungi, the same organisms responsible for athlete's foot, which thrive in warm, moist environments such as sweaty shoes, communal showers, and swimming pools. Risk factors include advancing age, diabetes, poor peripheral circulation, a weakened immune system, excessive sweating, minor nail or skin injury that allows fungal entry, and having athlete's foot that spreads to the nail. Sharing nail clippers, files, or footwear with an infected person can also facilitate transmission.
