Causes of Diabetic Foot Ulcer
Develops from a combination of peripheral neuropathy, which reduces protective sensation and allows unnoticed injury, and peripheral arterial disease, which impairs blood flow needed for wound healing, both common complications of long-standing poorly controlled diabetes. Repeated pressure from ill-fitting footwear, minor trauma, and elevated blood sugar levels that impair immune function and tissue repair further contribute to ulcer formation and poor healing.
