Leptospirosis Specialists in Block P, Janpath, Delhi

How do people usually catch leptospirosis?

It's typically acquired when skin cuts or mucous membranes come into contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with urine from infected animals such as rats, cattle, or dogs, which is why cases spike after flooding.

Is leptospirosis contagious from person to person?

Person-to-person spread is extremely rare; almost all cases result from environmental exposure to contaminated water or soil rather than contact with an infected person.

Can leptospirosis be treated at home?

Mild cases can be treated with oral antibiotics like doxycycline on an outpatient basis, but severe symptoms such as jaundice, reduced urination, or bleeding require hospitalization for intravenous antibiotics and organ support.

How can I protect myself during flood season?

Avoiding contact with floodwater when possible, wearing protective footwear, covering open wounds, and controlling rodents around the home significantly reduce the risk of infection during high-risk periods.

Does early treatment make a big difference?

Yes, starting antibiotics early significantly reduces the severity and duration of illness and lowers the risk of progressing to the severe Weil's disease form, so prompt evaluation of flu-like illness after flood exposure is important.
