Frequently Asked Questions

Is taking multiple medications always a problem?

Not necessarily; polypharmacy can be entirely appropriate when all medications are genuinely needed for managing multiple health conditions, but the risk of interactions and side effects rises with each additional drug, making regular review important.

How can I keep track of medications from different specialists?

Maintaining a single updated medication list shared across all providers and using one primary pharmacy helps ensure everyone involved in your care has full visibility into what you're taking.

What is a medication review and how often should it happen?

It's a comprehensive check by a physician or pharmacist to identify and discontinue unnecessary or duplicate medications and check for harmful interactions, generally recommended periodically for anyone on multiple long-term medications, especially older adults.

Can polypharmacy cause symptoms that look like a new illness?

Yes, confusion, dizziness, falls, and gastrointestinal upset from medication side effects or interactions can be mistaken for a new health problem, so any new symptom in someone on multiple medications should prompt a review of their drug list.

Who is most at risk of problematic polypharmacy?

Older adults managing several chronic conditions, particularly those seeing multiple specialists without a single coordinating primary care provider, are at greatest risk and benefit most from regular medication reviews.
