What is Inguinal Hernia?

An inguinal hernia occurs when a portion of intestine or fatty tissue protrudes through a weak point in the abdominal muscles in the groin region, creating a visible or palpable bulge. It is the most common type of hernia and occurs more frequently in men due to the natural anatomical passage left by the descent of the testes during fetal development. The bulge often becomes more noticeable when standing, coughing, or straining, and may reduce when lying down. If the protruding tissue becomes trapped and its blood supply compromised, it constitutes a surgical emergency.

Causes of Inguinal Hernia

Occurs due to a congenital or acquired weakness in the abdominal wall muscles, often at a site where the inguinal canal naturally exists. Risk factors include chronic coughing, heavy lifting, straining during bowel movements or urination, obesity, pregnancy, and a family history of hernias. Aging and prior abdominal surgery also weaken the muscle layers, increasing susceptibility.

Symptoms of Inguinal Hernia

Visible bulge in the groin or scrotum, discomfort or pain especially when bending or lifting, a heavy or dragging sensation in the groin, bulge that increases with standing or straining, burning or aching sensation at the bulge site, weakness or pressure in the groin

Treatment & Types of Inguinal Hernia in IP Extension, Delhi

Surgical repair, either open or laparoscopic, is the definitive treatment and involves pushing the protruding tissue back and reinforcing the weakened area, usually with a synthetic mesh. Small, asymptomatic hernias in low-risk patients may sometimes be monitored with watchful waiting, but surgery is generally recommended to prevent complications like strangulation. Pain relief and activity modification are used to manage symptoms before repair.

Inguinal hernias are classified as indirect, where tissue passes through the natural inguinal canal often present from birth, or direct, where it pushes through a weakened area of the abdominal wall usually from age-related or acquired weakness. They are also described by reducibility: a reducible hernia can be pushed back in or resolves when lying down, while an incarcerated hernia is stuck in place and a strangulated hernia has its blood supply cut off, the latter being a surgical emergency.
