Treatment often requires prolonged courses of oral antifungal medication, taken for several months, as it is generally more effective than topical treatments alone at penetrating the nail to clear the infection. Topical antifungal lacquers applied directly to the nail can be used for milder infections or in combination with oral therapy. In severe or resistant cases, temporary or permanent removal of the affected nail may be recommended to allow topical treatment to reach the underlying nail bed directly, and recurrence is common even after successful treatment without ongoing preventive foot care.
