Causes of Phimosis
Physiological phimosis in young boys results from natural adhesions between the foreskin and glans present at birth that gradually loosen with age. Pathological phimosis in older boys and men typically results from scarring caused by recurrent balanitis, a chronic skin condition called lichen sclerosus, or forceful attempted retraction that causes small tears and subsequent scar tissue formation. Poor hygiene can contribute to recurrent infections that worsen scarring.
