What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, the same species responsible for spreading dengue. The disease is characterized by sudden high fever and severe, often debilitating joint pain that can persist for weeks to months after the acute illness resolves. While rarely fatal, chikungunya can cause significant disability during the acute phase and chronic joint symptoms in a subset of patients. Outbreaks tend to occur in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly during and after monsoon seasons.

Moderate

Prevalence

Contagious

Causes of Chikungunya

Caused by the chikungunya virus, transmitted primarily through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant water. The virus cannot spread directly from person to person, and outbreaks are closely tied to mosquito breeding conditions during warm, rainy seasons.

Symptoms of Chikungunya

Sudden high fever, severe joint pain and swelling, muscle pain, headache, skin rash, fatigue, nausea, joint stiffness that can persist for weeks, swelling around joints

Treatment & Types of Chikungunya in Dindarpur, Delhi

There is no specific antiviral treatment, so management focuses on supportive care including rest, fluids, and medications such as paracetamol for fever and pain relief, while avoiding NSAIDs and aspirin until dengue has been ruled out due to bleeding risk. Physical therapy may help with persistent joint pain in the recovery phase.

Chikungunya infection is classified by phase: the acute phase, lasting about a week and marked by sudden high fever and severe joint pain, and the chronic phase, in which joint pain and stiffness persist for weeks to months or occasionally longer in a subset of patients, sometimes resembling an inflammatory arthritis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is chikungunya the same as dengue?

No, though both are spread by the same Aedes mosquitoes and can cause fever, chikungunya is caused by a different virus and is distinguished by its characteristically severe, often prolonged joint pain.

Why should I avoid ibuprofen or aspirin?

These medications are avoided until dengue is ruled out, since dengue carries a bleeding risk that these drugs can worsen; paracetamol is used instead for fever and pain.

Will the joint pain ever go away?

Most people see significant improvement within weeks, though a subset experience joint pain and stiffness that can persist for months, sometimes benefiting from physical therapy.

Can chikungunya spread directly between people?

No, it cannot spread directly person-to-person and requires an infected mosquito to bite and transmit the virus.

How can I protect my family during an outbreak?

Eliminating stagnant water around the home, using mosquito repellents, and using nets or screens are the most effective ways to reduce mosquito exposure during outbreak periods.
