Causes of Tobacco Dependence
Tobacco dependence develops primarily due to nicotine's powerful effect on the brain's dopamine-driven reward system, which reinforces continued use and creates a physical dependence that produces uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms when tobacco use stops. Psychological and social factors, including stress, habit formation, peer influence, and using tobacco as a coping mechanism, further reinforce the addictive pattern. Genetic factors are also believed to influence individual susceptibility to nicotine addiction and the difficulty experienced when attempting to quit.
