What is Tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, the two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat that form part of the immune system's first line of defense against inhaled or ingested pathogens. It is most commonly caused by viral infections, though bacterial infection, particularly with group A Streptococcus, accounts for a significant proportion of cases and requires antibiotic treatment. Tonsillitis is especially common in children but can occur at any age, and repeated episodes can significantly affect quality of life, sleep, and school or work attendance. Most cases resolve within a week to ten days with supportive or targeted treatment.
