What is Avascular Necrosis of Hip?
Avascular necrosis of the hip is a condition in which the blood supply to the head of the femur, the ball-shaped top of the thigh bone, is disrupted, causing the bone tissue to die and eventually collapse. Without adequate blood flow, the affected bone weakens and can no longer support the joint properly, leading to pain and progressive joint damage. It most commonly affects adults between 30 and 60 years old and, if left untreated, frequently progresses to collapse of the femoral head requiring joint replacement. Early diagnosis significantly improves the chances of preserving the natural joint.

Causes of Avascular Necrosis of Hip
Results from interrupted blood supply to the femoral head, commonly due to long-term corticosteroid use, excessive alcohol consumption, trauma such as hip fracture or dislocation, or conditions like sickle cell disease. Other risk factors include blood clotting disorders, radiation therapy, and certain autoimmune diseases. In some cases, no clear cause is identified, termed idiopathic avascular necrosis.
Symptoms of Avascular Necrosis of Hip
Groin pain that may radiate to the buttock or thigh, pain that worsens with weight-bearing activity, limping, reduced range of motion in the hip, pain at rest as the condition progresses, stiffness in the hip joint, sudden worsening of pain if the femoral head collapses
Treatment & Types of Avascular Necrosis of Hip in Delhi High Court, Delhi
Early-stage disease may be managed with activity modification, pain relief, and medications to improve blood flow or reduce bone loss, alongside procedures like core decompression to relieve pressure within the bone and stimulate new blood vessel growth. More advanced disease with collapse of the femoral head typically requires surgical intervention, most commonly total hip replacement, to restore function and relieve pain. Early intervention offers the best chance of preserving the natural joint.
