How quickly can muscle be lost after surgery?

Older adults can lose a meaningful amount of muscle strength within just a few days of bed rest, considerably faster than younger patients, which is why hospitals now prioritize getting patients out of bed as soon as it is safely possible after surgery. Even short periods of inactivity can have an outsized effect in this age group.

Is post-operative deconditioning reversible?

Yes, in most people it responds well to structured resistance exercise and adequate protein intake, though older or frailer patients may take considerably longer to regain their pre-surgery strength than younger patients. Starting rehabilitation early gives the best chance of a full return to baseline function.

Why is protein intake emphasized during recovery?

Surgery triggers a catabolic stress response that breaks down muscle protein faster than usual, so adequate dietary protein is needed to support the muscle repair and rebuilding that exercise stimulates. A physiotherapist or dietitian can help set a target intake appropriate for the specific surgery and recovery stage.

Can deconditioning be prevented before surgery even happens?

Yes, prehabilitation programs that build strength and fitness in the weeks before a planned surgery have been shown to reduce the severity of post-operative deconditioning and speed recovery. This is particularly valuable for older adults or those with reduced baseline fitness undergoing major surgery.

When should I be worried about deconditioning after a family member's surgery?

Watch for an inability to stand or walk independently that persists beyond the first few days, new unsteadiness, or a reluctance to move due to pain, and raise these with the surgical or rehabilitation team promptly. Early physiotherapy referral usually addresses these signs effectively before they become entrenched.
