Causes of Subdural Haematoma
Most commonly caused by head trauma such as a fall, motor vehicle accident, or assault, which tears small blood vessels bridging the brain surface and its covering. Chronic subdural haematomas often occur in older adults or those on blood-thinning medications after even minor, sometimes forgotten, head injuries because brain shrinkage with age stretches these bridging veins. Risk factors include advanced age, chronic alcohol use, anticoagulant medication use, and a history of falls.
