Causes of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
The exact mechanism is not fully understood, but complex regional pain syndrome is thought to arise from an abnormal response of the peripheral and central nervous systems to an injury, involving dysregulated inflammatory signaling, abnormal nerve fiber sensitization, and disrupted communication with the autonomic nervous system that controls blood vessels and sweat glands. It typically follows a specific triggering event, such as a fracture, surgery, sprain, or prolonged immobilization, though the severity of the initial injury does not always correlate with the severity of the resulting syndrome. Psychological stress is thought to be an aggravating rather than a primary causal factor.
