What is Chronic Sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis is a long-standing inflammation of the sinuses, the air-filled cavities surrounding the nose, that persists for twelve weeks or longer despite treatment attempts. The inflammation causes the sinus linings to swell, blocking normal drainage and mucus clearance, which leads to fluid buildup and creates an environment prone to recurrent infection. It can result from persistent infection, allergies, structural nasal abnormalities, or nasal polyps, and often significantly affects quality of life through chronic congestion, facial discomfort, and reduced sense of smell. Unlike acute sinusitis which typically resolves within a few weeks, chronic sinusitis often requires a combination of medical and sometimes surgical management.

Causes of Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis develops when the sinus linings remain inflamed due to persistent bacterial or fungal infection, chronic allergic rhinitis, or structural issues such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps that block normal drainage. Environmental irritants like smoking and air pollution, immune system disorders, and dental infections spreading to the sinuses can also contribute. Biofilm formation by bacteria within the sinuses is thought to make some cases especially resistant to standard antibiotic treatment.

Symptoms of Chronic Sinusitis

persistent nasal congestion or blockage, thick discolored nasal discharge, facial pain or pressure especially around the eyes and cheeks, reduced sense of smell, postnasal drip causing sore throat or cough, fatigue, headache, occasional fever during flare-ups

Treatment & Types of Chronic Sinusitis in Chaukhandi, Delhi

Initial management includes saline nasal irrigation, intranasal corticosteroid sprays to reduce inflammation, and short courses of antibiotics when bacterial infection is confirmed. Oral corticosteroids or antihistamines may be used for allergy-related or severely inflamed cases, and allergy testing with targeted treatment can help address an underlying trigger. When medical therapy fails to control symptoms, endoscopic sinus surgery is performed to widen the sinus openings, remove polyps, and correct structural blockages to restore normal drainage.

Chronic sinusitis is classified as chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps or without nasal polyps, a distinction that significantly affects treatment choice and response, and separately as either related to allergy (allergic fungal sinusitis or allergic rhinitis-driven) or non-allergic, often linked to structural blockage or persistent infection.
