Causes of Osteoporosis
Caused by an imbalance between bone breakdown and bone formation, most significantly influenced by declining oestrogen levels after menopause in women, which accelerates bone loss, and general age-related decline in bone density in both sexes. Other contributing factors include inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake, physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, low body weight, and certain medications such as long-term corticosteroid use. Family history and certain medical conditions affecting hormone levels or nutrient absorption can further increase risk.
