What is Brain Aneurysm?
A brain aneurysm is a weak, bulging spot on the wall of an artery within the brain that can slowly enlarge over time and, if it ruptures, causes bleeding into the space surrounding the brain known as a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Most unruptured aneurysms cause no symptoms and are discovered incidentally on imaging done for other reasons, but a ruptured aneurysm constitutes a life-threatening medical emergency. The characteristic warning sign of rupture is a sudden, severe headache often described as the worst headache of one's life. Risk of rupture depends on the aneurysm's size, location, and shape.
