What is Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are soft, painless, non-cancerous growths that develop on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses as a result of chronic inflammation. They typically appear as teardrop-shaped growths and, when small, may cause no noticeable symptoms, but larger or multiple polyps can obstruct the nasal airway and impair drainage of the sinuses. They are strongly associated with chronic inflammatory conditions such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, and chronic sinusitis, and tend to recur even after treatment if the underlying inflammation is not controlled. Nasal polyps are more common in adults and are rare in young children, where their presence may prompt evaluation for cystic fibrosis.

Causes of Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps develop from chronic inflammation of the nasal and sinus lining, often driven by conditions such as allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, asthma, or aspirin sensitivity. The exact trigger for polyp formation is not completely understood, but it involves an ongoing inflammatory response that causes the mucous membrane to swell and eventually form grape-like growths. A combination of aspirin sensitivity, asthma, and nasal polyps together is recognized as a distinct clinical syndrome.

Symptoms of Nasal Polyps

persistent nasal congestion, reduced or absent sense of smell, runny nose, postnasal drip, facial pressure or pain, snoring or difficulty breathing through the nose, frequent sinus infections, headache

Treatment & Types of Nasal Polyps in Ali, Delhi

Intranasal corticosteroid sprays are the first-line treatment to shrink polyps and reduce underlying inflammation, with oral corticosteroids used for short courses in more severe cases. Newer biologic medications targeting specific inflammatory pathways are used for difficult-to-control cases, particularly those linked to asthma. When medical therapy fails to adequately control symptoms or significant obstruction persists, endoscopic sinus surgery is performed to remove the polyps and improve sinus drainage, though recurrence is common without ongoing anti-inflammatory management.

Nasal polyps are broadly classified as antrochoanal polyps, typically single polyps arising from the maxillary sinus and more common in children, or ethmoidal polyps, usually multiple and bilateral, arising from the ethmoid sinuses and more common in adults. A distinct clinical pattern combining nasal polyps, asthma, and aspirin sensitivity is recognized as a specific syndrome requiring particular management.
