COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which emerged in late 2019 and rapidly spread to become a global pandemic. The disease primarily affects the respiratory system but can also impact multiple other organs, and severity ranges from asymptomatic or mild infection to severe pneumonia and respiratory failure. Transmission occurs mainly through respiratory droplets and airborne particles, particularly in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces. Widespread vaccination and prior infection have substantially reduced the severity of illness in most populations, though the virus continues to circulate with new variants.
