A breast lump is a localized area of thickened or swollen tissue within the breast that feels different from the surrounding tissue, and can arise from a wide range of causes ranging from entirely benign changes to breast cancer. Most breast lumps, particularly in younger women, are benign and related to normal hormonal fluctuations, fibrocystic changes, or fluid-filled cysts. However, any new or persistent lump warrants prompt clinical evaluation with examination and imaging to rule out malignancy. Characteristics such as firmness, irregular borders, and fixation to surrounding tissue raise greater concern.
