📖What is Autoimmune Hepatitis?

Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic liver disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the liver's own cells, causing ongoing inflammation that can progressively damage liver tissue if not treated. The exact trigger for this misdirected immune response is not fully understood, though it is believed to involve a combination of genetic predisposition and an environmental trigger, such as an infection or medication, in susceptible individuals. The condition predominantly affects women and can present at any age, sometimes appearing suddenly with symptoms resembling acute hepatitis, and other times developing more gradually and being discovered incidentally through abnormal liver blood tests. Without treatment, ongoing inflammation can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure over time. Fortunately, autoimmune hepatitis generally responds well to immunosuppressive medication, which can induce remission and prevent long-term liver damage in most patients.
