Alcohol Use Disorder is a chronic medical condition characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite significant social, occupational, or health consequences. It exists on a spectrum from mild to severe, and involves changes in brain function that create a compulsive drive to drink and can lead to physical dependence. Long-term heavy drinking can damage nearly every organ system, including the liver, heart, and brain, and significantly increases the risk of accidents, mental health disorders, and certain cancers.
