Types of Bone Marrow Biopsy
The procedure typically combines bone marrow aspiration, which draws a liquid sample, with a core biopsy, which removes a small solid piece of marrow tissue, usually both taken from the posterior iliac crest of the pelvis. Occasionally the sternum is used for aspiration alone in specific circumstances. The two samples together give hematologists a complete picture of both marrow cellularity and architecture.
